What to Expect in Your First ABA Therapy Session
Starting ABA therapy is a big step, and the first session is designed to help your child feel comfortable while giving the therapy team the information they need.
1. Parent Consultation
Your BCBA or therapist will begin by talking with you about:
-
Your child’s routine, strengths, and challenges
-
What motivates them
-
Any past reports or IEPs
This helps the team understand your goals and your child’s needs.
The therapist spends time simply getting to know your child by:
-
Playing with their favorite toys
-
Following their lead
-
Creating a fun, safe environment
No teaching or demands — the goal is comfort and connection.
3. Gentle Observation
Once your child is relaxed, the therapist observes how they play, communicate, and respond.
These are not tests — just natural observations to learn how your child learns best.
4. Parent Involvement
You’ll receive guidance on:
-
Reinforcement strategies
-
How to support behavior at home
-
What to expect in the first weeks
5. Goal Setting
After a few sessions, the BCBA creates an individualized plan with clear goals for communication, behavior, play, and daily skills.
6. Normal Adjustment
Some children warm up quickly; others need time. Hesitation or upset is normal. Therapists use patience and positive reinforcement to help them adjust.
7. Ongoing Communication
You’ll receive regular updates and can meet with your BCBA to discuss progress, challenges, and next steps.
